The
Mendonca Building's magical Courtyard is open again for First Friday in February
to give you an opportunity to see some beautiful pieces of art, hear great
Hawaiian music and get a head start on Valentine
purchases.
JOHN
JOHNSON is very familiar with the Courtyard. He is a freedive
photographer whose international award-winning works have appeared in the
Smithsonian Institute and the Natural History Museum of London. He has been
featured on KHNL and KGMB and his images have been published in a variety of
local publications, including Hawaii Skin Diver, Star Bulletin, and the Honolulu
Advertiser. You can find him on Facebook under One Breath Photography or
visit his site www.onebreathphoto.com. Better yet,
come to Chinatown for First Friday to see a variety of his giclees and
prints.”
Originally
from Brazil, NILMA HUNTER discovered her love for jewelry designing about
4 years ago. She quit her job of 12 years in a hotel on the North
Shore and dedicated her time to this new love. Self taught and motivated by Phil
4:13, she designs and handcrafts unique ocean inspired pieces with mostly earth
friendly silver (reclaimed from old electronic equipment and other
resources). She also uses other sustainable mediums such as sea
glass and shells found on beaches and Golden Grass (naturally recurring in the
central area of Brazil). She also tries to keep the crochet and knit art her
mother taught her alive in her jewelry using thin wire to create one of a kind
pieces. Nilma enjoys the challenge of custom orders, giving you the
opportunity to design your own piece. Her most popular item is her inspirational
words stamped discs, which are also customizable. Finger printing on
silver is a great way to keep your loved ones near your heart, stop by her table
to check it out! You can also find out more on www.nilmahuntercreations.com.
ERIC
MEAD always thought it was cool to be an underground artist. Recently
however, he's been convinced to go more public with his work. Throughout his
interesting life , he blends a unique style of tropical landscapes, bright
colors, comic bookish lines and graffiti-style elements. He currently offers a
line of original hand-painted surf-style hats, ink drawings, sketches, studies
and paintings. It'll be interesting to see where Eric will go with his art,
considering his other interests in big wave surfing, clothing design,
acupuncture, visionary activism and poetic freestyling; all of which reflect the
mind of a dreamer trying to live his life as art.
SHAYNE TURNER returns with her
“Grand Strands” which are an extravagant array of precious and semi
precious stones, ranging from rubies to aquamarines that capture the imagination
with sparkle and surprise. Shayne Turner surrounded by the scenery of beautiful
and majestic Temple Valley crafts this medley of uniqueness. Stop by and
view Shayne’s one of a kind Jewelry Art. Her inspired and hand crafted
creations will make new memories and traditions for you, your family and your
friends.
Also
returning will be ALESSANDRA JANN-JORDAN, whose business Long
Lost Treasures is an individually run hand crafted jewelry and card business
based out of Oahu, Hawaii. Every jewelry design is hand made using semi-precious
stones, fresh water pearls, Swarovski crystallized elements, vintage coral, a
variety of metals, and hand glass blown beads – all collected from the
designer’s travels around the world. The greeting cards are created with
layers of beautiful hand crafted papers, originating from countries such as
Korea, France and Italy. The cards are one of a kind and irreproducible, as the
vintage elements used to decorate them are unique, recycled and
often antique.
“Resident artists” KRIS GOTO, SEAN GALLAGHER
& CHEYNE GALLARDE will be upstairs in the Chinatown Artist
Lofts, and will have their studios open for a look at their newest
creations. Perhaps Cheyne will have a Photo Booth operating.
Don’t forget to go upstairs!
FRED
GAYAGAS will be on stage for his usual contemporary and Hawaiian music
and joining him for an evening in Chinatown will be AL
TRINGALI, who returns after several years away on the Mainland. Al
was our original Courtyard musician when First Friday was in its infant
stages. He will be bringing his guitar and singing traditional
Hawaiian music. Eia ka leka uila a'u.
Not to be disappointed if you are looking for good
food, you will find ELGIN ONAGA who will be offering his North
Shore ISLAND KABOBS for sale all evening. Along with meat and
chicken, he has a veggie version as well.
Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith Street through the stand of bamboo at the Blue Dragon Gate or from the Maunakea Street doors. This event is free and open to the public.
