Joining us once again for First Friday in August is an old friend in Dayton Watanabe. Dayton will be playing music both in Hawaiian Slack Key and standard tunings. If you were here the last time he played, you are already familiar with his mastery of his craft.

If you could not make it to the First Friday in July, you missed a great show! The Hawai‘i Friends of Civil Rights brought us a "Star-studded evening of Jazz!" All the hard-core jazz aficionados were in attendance, including the Governor and other VIP's. The Second Floor Courtyard was jam-packed to capacity! Gabe Baltizar, Rea Fox, the Chuck James trio, Wally Amos, and Al Harrington really "brought it". The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawai‘i State Art Museum send out a big MAHALO to the Hawai‘i Friends of Civil Rights, Faye Kennedy, and John Nichols, for putting on a great evening of jazz. We may have to move to the Front Lawn the next time they come...Yes, they will be back!

Looking towards the future, September will bring a military band to the Hawai‘i State Art Museum for First Friday. Details are to come available within the next few weeks.

There are features on Lynne Yoshiko Nakasone receiving the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship, the "First Friday" event entitled "Star-Studded Evening of Jazz" on Friday, July 6th; the "Second Saturday" event entitled "Get Crazy! with the Hawai‘i Quilt Guild" on Saturday, July 14th; and the "Art Lunch" lecture presented by Christopher Greywolf on Tuesday, July 31st.

New Exhibits - Friday night in the back of the Diamond Head Gallery is BODY OF WORK: INTERPRETATIONSOF THE HUMAN FORM. This exhibition from the Art in Public Places collection, focuses on the human figure, primarily the nude, through portraiture, figure studies, and symbolic representations.

ABOUT THE HAWAII STATE MUSEUM

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is located in No. 1 Capitol Distric Building at 250 South Hotel Street. The building is situated in the historic Hawaii Capital Cultural District, across from 'Iolani Palace and the State Capitol.
