Join us on First Friday on November 1, 2013 from 6 -- 9 p.m. at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum for performances by Pila Nahenahe. The slack key ensemble is led by Ron Loo and his son Pomaika‘i and will present two sets for the evening. The first set showcases selected solos of slack key masters such as Gabby Pahinui, Leonard Kwan, Raymond Kane, Sonny Chillingworth, and Ledward Ka‘apana. To close out the night, Pila Nahenahe performs Ron Loo's slack key arrangements of mele (songs) that chronicle important events and individuals in Hawai‘i's history, as well as longstanding island favorites.
This First Friday will also be one of your last chances to view the ongoing accession show, which will be closing on November 4, 2013 to make room for the installation of The Gertrude Mary Joan Damon Haig Collection HE MAKANA of Hawaiian Art, Paintings and Prints. Located in the Diamond Head Gallery, accession features 37 new additions to the Art in Public Places Collection that are on exhibit for the first time.
As we enter the holiday season, HiSAM will be welcoming back Ruth Freedman for First Friday in December. Ruth will be playing classic music as well as holiday mainstays on her 100 year-old vintage harp. HSFCA and HiSAM would also like to thank the Hawai‘i Fashion Incubator and Moana Events for putting on an amazing fashion show in October as part of Hawai‘i Fashion Month!
The galleries of HiSAM will be open during your visit.
Galleries are open from 6 to 8:45 p.m. on First Friday. As the museum's supply of chairs are limited, low folding chairs and mats are recommended at the second floor open courtyard, which overlooks the newly opened Sculpture Garden. Don't miss this special treat
