Presenting Makakolu, A New Exhibition at The ARTS at Marks Garage

The ARTS at Marks Garage is proud to exhibit "Makakolu" on display through the month of November. Join us for the opening reception this coming First Friday, November 6th from 6 to 10 p.m. at The ARTS at Marks Garage as well as the closing party on November 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. with a live raffle of the available artwork.

Loosely translated as "Three Eyes," Makakolu is the third installment in a series of exhibitions inspired by the core word "maka." The show includes last year's "Makalua" ("Two Eyes") by artists Carl F.K. Pao and Charlton Kūpaʻa Hee, with the addition of a new collaborator, Cory K.H. Taum. Both Hee and Taum were students of Pao when they attended Kamehameha Schools Kapālama High School. Now, the three continue to inspire and inform each other as they explore their shared Kanaka Maoli heritage through diverse yet unified perspectives. Together, this Kanaka Maoli troika interprets the past in the present to inspire the future.

Carl F.K. Pao is a Contemporary Hawaiian Artist/Educator born, raised, living and working in the city of Honolulu, on the island of Oʻahu. He earned a Bachelor's of Fine Arts from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa ('94) and a Master's of Fine Arts (w/ First Class Honours) from the Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland ('99). Carl has been teaching full-time at the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama High School since 2000, and works in the media of painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and more.

Carlton Kūpaʻa Hee is a former student of Pao's who has since shown at several important exhibits including a solo show at ii Gallery. As a modern Hawaiian brought up in Eastern, Western, and Pacific traditions, he gravitates towards historical events and people who have successfully found ways to meld multiple cultures in hopes that he may do so within himself: leaning on the past to inform the future.

Cory Taum is a young Kanaka Maoli artist that lives and works in Hawaii. He is an active mural artist and heavily inspired from the public movement. He participated in last years Loku House, has worked on numerous community murals, and has participated in multiple artist in residencies around the world.

This show is curated by The ARTS at Marks Garage curator and Hawaii Academy of Performing Arts Executive Director, Rich Richardson. The ARTS at Marks Garage is an independent, non-profit, sanctuary for collaboration, freedom of expression, and the arts. This year, The ARTS attracted over 40,000 people for lectures, workshops, screenings, exhibits, and performances. Over the past 13 years, we have served the equivalent of nearly every single person in the City of Honolulu.

Gallery Hours: Noon to 5pm, Tuesday through Saturday.
