Nanci Amaka will be opening her space Ark Of The Unicorns #203 at the Chinatown Artists Lofts from 6p -9p as a communal workspace. She's invitingthe art and crafts communityto come work either on their own projects, or to help crochet drop-shaped orbs for an upcoming collaborative project called The Oil & Water Drop Project which is sponsored by Pow!Wow!!, Kala Roots and will be shown in Kakaako Agora mid February. These drop-shaped orbs will eventually be filled with plastic debris collected from beaches around Oahu as part of an effort to bring awareness and start dialogue on the effects of oil on our water:plastics in oceans, oil spills, toxic pollution by corporations, etc.
<3 Leighanne
Hailing from San Francisco and calling Oahu her new home, "<3 Leighanne" has produced concepts, lore and knit creations surrounding the ideas of "making" friends out of discarded objects and trash on the island. The stories of the creator and creatures come to life in pages from her accompanying graphic novel and the knitted creatures themselves, both will be on display this FirstFridayat the Mendonça Artwalk.
Thomas Seam Kelleher
Scouring the bins and palettes at Re-use Hawaii has become a favorite pastime of architect and artist Kelleher. A recent treasure find included three-dozen discarded tube steel bleacher railing sections from a demolished gymnasium at Fort Schafter military base. Re-purposing the pieces by integrating the essential character of the railings' mid-century design ethos into new functioning objects, Tommy aims to do more than salvage the pieces for the stock material let alone its recyclable value per weight.
Pieces on display at tommytrain.studio at the Chinatown Artists Lofts will include Art Display Frames, 4-panel Pocketing Rolling Vehicle Gate, WIP Mobile Workstations for ARTS at Marks Garage.
