HAWAII STATE ART MUSEUM

First Friday at HiSAM - Fashion Flight + Alt/Air

Free evening of art and music at HiSAM! Hawaii State Art Museum (HiSAM) and Mori by Art + Flea presents a very special First Friday experience for one night only. Local designers Matt Bruening and Rumi Murakami will be presenting their respective fashion collections for this special night of November. The show titled "Fashion Flight: Paper|Plane" will showcase these local designers' newest collections: Matt Bruening's "Anywhere But Here" collection inspired by the concept of transporting the wearer to another destination, dimension or state of mind and Rumi Murakami's "Paper" collection where she revisits her roots of tailored, more structured shapes to produce pieces that fold, wrap and drape with a two-dimensional quality. Second floor of the No. 1 Capitol District building.

Also taking place during November's First Friday event at HiSAM, Alt/Air (Aly Ishikuni-Sasaki & Brandon Udani) is coming back from their hiatus and bringing a new, revitalized sound for their audiences. Alt/Air's performance will be in collaboration with SPELLS (Ken Selders, Kevin Senada and Joe Pa'ahana), an underground music promotion and visual art collective based in Honolulu. This one-of-a-kind performance is to take place in a mirrored room on the ground floor of the No. 1 Capitol District building. It is to be an art installation experience rather than a concert, where event attendees will step into the world of Alt/Air. In this world, the audible cinematic, experimental and "dream-pop" sounds of Alt/Air will materialize into a visible and tangible transformative musical experience.

6:00 - 9:00 PM, ground floor and second floor of the No 1. Capitol District building (250 South Hotel St., corner of Richards and S. Hotel). Free and open to the public. HiSAM galleries will be open (admission is always free). Parking available across the street in the Ali'i Place building (enter at 1099 Alakea St., cash only) or metered street parking in the area. Valet parking available at the pull-in on Richards St (look on the right side for the bollard posts after turning left from S. Beretania St.). Several TheBus lines stop in front of or close to the building.

The museum cafe, Artizen by MW, will also be open.

The Friends of the Hawaii State Art Museum will be hosting a bar with wine and beer.

6:00 - 9:00 PM, take the elevators or stairs to the second floor of the No 1. Valet parking is available at the Richards St. entrance to the building. Several TheBus lines stop in front of or close to the building.

MEN

Human beings have been at the center of creative expression since the very beginning of the history of art. Throughout this rich and complex history there has been much attention and scrutiny aimed at the female form. This exhibition consists of a selection of works from the Art in Public Places Collection that puts its focus solely on artistic depictions of men. Ideas of masculinity are presented in ways that are sometimes direct, sometimes fictitious, and sometimes symbolic. MEN brings to the forefront a variety of approaches that artists employ to capture, display and express the male form and psyche. View artworks in the exhibit in our online catalog: MEN.

HAWAI‘I: Change & Continuity includes 130 artworks from the Art in Public Places Collection of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and tells a story of the past, examining the overlapping influences of nature's bounty and human impact on a fragile environment.

As you walk through the exhibit, you will see art that reflects on the forces of nature and man's intrusion. Relevant quotes are placed on walls to help the viewer understand the meaning.

"Hopefully the exhibition will express something of what this place is like. What Hawai‘i is like," exhibit designer Tom Klobe said. "It is important for us who live here and people who are visiting to understand."

Second floor, Ewa Gallery. Through May 2019. View artworks in the exhibit in our online catalog: HAWAI‘I: Change & Continuity.
