HAWAII STATE ART MUSEUM

First Friday at HiSAM - Holiday Jazz

Free, family-friendly evening of art and music at HiSAM! Holiday jazz music by Mike Lewis & Friends on the second floor; Men in Grey Suits and DJ Keala Kennelly on the ground floor at the HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x Mori. Admission is always free!

6:00 - 9:00 PM, second floor of the No 1. Capitol District building (250 South Hotel St., corner of Richards and S. Hotel). Free and open to the public. HiSAM galleries on the second floor will be open (admission is always free). Parking available across the street in the Ali'i Place building (enter at 1099 Alakea St., cash only) or metered street parking in the area. Several TheBus lines stop in front of or close to the building.

The museum cafe, Artizen by MW, will also be open.

The Friends of the Hawaii State Art Museum will be hosting a bar with wine and beer.

MEN

Human beings have been at the center of creative expression since the very beginning of the history of art. Throughout this rich and complex history there has been much attention and scrutiny aimed at the female form. This exhibition consists of a selection of works from the Art in Public Places Collection that puts its focus solely on artistic depictions of men. Ideas of masculinity are presented in ways that are sometimes direct, sometimes fictitious, and sometimes symbolic. MEN brings to the forefront a variety of approaches that artists employ to capture, display and express the male form and psyche. View artworks in the exhibit in our online catalog: MEN.

STATE OF ART: new work

For more than fifty years, the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawai ªi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts has been recognized as one of the most significant collections of contemporary art of Hawai ªi. This exhibit invites you to engage with a selection of recent additions to the collection from across the Hawaiian Islands. The thirty-one artworks acquired from eighteen exhibitions offer an insight into current trends and themes in the local arts scene and provides an opportunity to see the diversity of works being created in Hawai ªi today. HAWAI‘I: Change & Continuity includes 130 artworks from the Art in Public Places Collection of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and tells a story of the past, examining the overlapping influences of nature's bounty and human impact on a fragile environment.

As you walk through the exhibit, you will see art that reflects on the forces of nature and man's intrusion. Relevant quotes are placed on walls to help the viewer understand the meaning.

"Hopefully the exhibition will express something of what this place is like. What Hawai‘i is like," exhibit designer Tom Klobe said. "It is important for us who live here and people who are visiting to understand."

ABOUT THE HAWAII STATE MUSEUM

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is located in No. 1 Capitol Distric Building at 250 South Hotel Street. The building is situated in the historic Hawaii Capital Cultural District, across from 'Iolani Palace and the State Capitol. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information on the Hawai'i State Art Museum call (808) 586-0900
