INDONESIAN ANGKLUNG GROUP OF HAWAI‘I
The Indonesian Angklung group of Hawai‘i is made up of members of the local Indonesian community who are passionate about sharing their culture. We perform using the angklung, a traditional musical instrument from Indonesia made of bamboo. The angklung is played by shaking it, producing harmonious notes, and is recognized by UNESCO as an important part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
The group’s goal is to introduce people in Hawai‘i to the beauty of Indonesian music and traditions. Our performances include both traditional songs and popular songs and arrangements ,showcasing the angklung’s unique sound and the richness of Indonesian culture. Through music, we aim to celebrate and build understanding and connections between communities.
UHM CENTER FOR SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES
Performed by Honolulu-based Balinese artist I Made Widana and dancers of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Balinese Gamelan Music and Dance Ensemble.
ISLAND BREEZE
Island Breeze is an all star trio blending Hawaiian and Japanese instruments in a creatively inspiring and exciting style featuring Jeff Peterson on guitar, Riley Lee on Japanese shakuhachi, and Kenny Endo on taiko.
Grammy-award-winning Hawaiian slack key guitarist Jeff Peterson and shakuhachi (bamboo flute) master Riley Lee have been working together for many years but joined forces with taiko master Kenny Endo in 2012 during a week-long residency in which each artist conducted intensive workshops in Honolulu. The trio have been concertizing ever since, and recorded a CD in 2014 which received a Nā Hōkū Hanohano nomination in 2015.
