Open Forum Art Exhibition Opens at The Kahala
Surfing Art Collaboration between Dan Merkel and Harald-M. Lehnardt

The Kahala Hotel & Resort will feature the artistic expressions of collaborators Dan Merkel and Harald-M. Lehnardt on view in the Veranda Lounge December 11 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and then continuing on display in the Plumeria Beach House December 12, 2011 through February 29, 2012.  This art exhibition marks the first display of the artists’ new Hawaiian Legends Series.

Dan Merkel is one of Hawaii’s surf photography pioneer and an Emmy Award-winning photographer. In his collaboration with German-born artist and typographer Harald-M. Lehnardt, Merkel is presenting iconic photos of Hawaiian patriarch and legendary waterman Eddie Aikau, one of which was recently  featured on the cover of the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave International Surfing Contest.

Edward “Eddie” Ryan Makua Hanai Aikau was a North Shore lifeguard and waterman who sacrificed his life to save others during a historic voyage aboard the double-hulled voyaging canoe Hokulea.  The canoe left the Hawaiian islands on a 30-day, 2,500-mile journey to Tahiti in November 1978. It developed a leak and capsized about 12 miles south of Molokai, stranding the crew in the open ocean. Eddie made the courageous decision to paddle toward Lanai on a surfboard in search of help. He was never seen again. He was 31. The ensuing rescue search was the largest in Hawaii’s history. Over time, Aikau’s sacrifice has reached mythic proportions and his legacy is revered.

In the Hawaiian Legend Series, Merkel and Lehnardt have joined artistic forces to manipulate dynamic and compelling photographic compositions into modern day graphically-altered adaptions. The result is elegant, synthesized interdisciplinary works of art.

Lehnardt says of the collaboration, “The synergy between text and image is my passion. My urge to discover and create new compositions by adding text, word fragments, and single letters to distinct images is playful, yet with ‘intent.’”

The art exhibition opening in the Veranda Lounge on December 11 is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The artwork will remain on display in The Kahala’s beachside Plumeria Beach House restaurant beginning December 12, 2011 through February 29, 2012.
