First Thursdays: $100 Nationally Certified Slam Poetry Competition and Open Mic... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. -- Taylor Mali, a New York City native who is one of the most well known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement. A veteran of the HBO series Def Poetry Jam, Mali has won the National Poetry Slam championship four times; he has published two books of poetry and several CDs of spoken word, has narrated six audio books, and for a brief time he was the official voice of Burger King. The New York Times describes Mali as "a ranting comic showman and literary provocateur." He has been honored as a National Poetry Slam Legend and is a past president of the nonprofit Poetry Slam, Inc.
-- An official qualifier for the 2011-2012 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2012 Grand Slam Finals (on April 5th, 2012) that will determine HawaiiSlam s 9th National Poetry Slam team.

The 9th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (February 2nd, 2012). The top two poets will qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals in April 2012 that will determine the team to represent Hawai`i at the 2012 National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The special feature for this show is Taylor Mali, a New York City native who is one of the most well known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement. Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Ample street parking and $4 valet parking will be available. Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at
