  • First Thursdays Poetry Slam at Fresh Cafe - Thursday 9/5/2013



Join us this Thursday (September 5th) for a top-notch installment of First Thursdays at Fresh Cafe!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- Kahlil Almustafa, the 2002 Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion. He is the author of four books of poetry and his debut CD CounterIntelligence. He is also a recipient of the Future Aesthetics Artist Re-grant (FAAR), funded by the Ford Foundation as well as the Field s Economic Revitalization for Performing Artists (ERPA) grant which receives funding from The Rockefeller Foundation s Cultural Innovation Fund.
-- The kickoff of the 2013-2014 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2014 Grand Slam Finals that will determine HawaiiSlam s 11th National Poetry Slam team.
-- Turntable Sorcery by DJ Toki (Sisters in Sound)
-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, Nikila Badua, Jeremiah Skurtu, Sarah Hodges, Hanam Mun, and Risa Oram)

The official 2013-2014 slam season begins this September!! On September 5th, the HawaiiSlam team will start qualifiers for its 11th official team. The top two poets from each monthly slam will qualify for the 2014 Grand Slam Finals for a chance to represent Hawai`i at the National Poetry Slam.
