HAWAII THEATRE PRESENTS HULA GUYZ MARCH 14TH

Award-Winning Robert Cazimero and Hālau Nā Kamalei O Līlīlehua, and the historic Hawaii Theatre, Join Forces to Raise Funds

Honolulu, HI; February 20, 2014: Hawaii Theatre, Robert Cazimero and his award-winning Hālau Nā Kamalei O Līlīlehua present HULA GUYZ at the historic Hawaii Theatre on Friday; March 14, 2014; at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $32 (plus a $3/ticket Theatre restoration fee). This year's fundraising event focuses on the gents of Nā Kamalei and their kumu, and their constant mantra that "hula is the art of Hawaiian dance, expressing everything we hear, see, smell, taste, touch and feel. Hula is life."

Those familiar with Robert Cazimero's hālau fundraisers know that there is always a lot of great music, singing, hula, and plenty of laughs. This year is no exception as HULA GUYZ brings back Nā Kamalei gents that are coming home for the event (Kilohana Domingo, Patrick Makuakane, Charles Padua), gents that have graduated as kumu hula (Kyle Atabay, Manu Boyd, Brad Cooper, Patrick Makuakane), and introduces us to new young Nā Kamalei gents (Kaipo Dudoit, Parker Spencer). In the first act here is a tribute to Robert's kumu, Maiki Aiu Lake, reminisces the early days of Nā Kamalei, a parody-production number, the young beauties of Michael Pili Pang's Hālau Hula Ka No‘eau, and an introduction to the new gents of the hālau.

The second act features nā haku mele, compositions, of Nā Kamalei such as "Aloha Aku, Aloha Mai" (Keo Woolford/Michael Casupang), "Hale Lehua" (Michael Casupang), "Li‘ula" (Ki Quilloy), "Pua Laha‘ole" (Keala Chock), "For Something Soft" (Brad Cooper), "Maunalahilahi" (Alvin Hanzawa), "Ka Pua Kiele" (Doug Wong), "Pualani" John Enos, "Lovely Honolulu Moon" (Moses Crabbe), "Aloha I Ku‘u Home O Paumalu" (Keola Makaiau), "Kalaekilohana" (Kilohana Domingo), and "‘Ala Pikake" (Manu Boyd).

Robert Uluwehi Cazimero is best known as a singer and musician, and one-half of The Brothers Cazimero. Robert and Roland were nominated for a Best Hawaiian Music Album Grammy in 2004. In 2006, Robert (again with his brother, Roland) was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, and 2008 brought Robert two more accolades; a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts and national recognition as a USA Ford Fellow of Music. Robert is a prolific composer, arranger, lyricist and choreographer as well as one of the most respected kumu hula (teachers of hula) in Hawai‘i, having been taught to dance by the late hula master, Maiki ‘Aiu Lake, who enlisted him to become a teacher for male dancers. Cazimero has taught about 200 students across two generations, with several who went on to ‘uniki (graduate as a kumu hula) and start their own hālau. Among them are Manu Boyd of Ke ‘A‘ali‘i Ku Makani, Patrick Makuakane of Nā Lei Hulu i Ka Wekiu from San Francisco, Karl Veto Baker and Michael Casupang of Hālau i Ka Wekiu, and Moses Crabbe of Hālauolaokalani.

In 1975 Robert founded Hālau Nā Kamalei O Līlīlehua with six students from Kamehameha Schools, at a time when most men didn't dance hula for fear of being perceived as effeminate. The Merrie Monarch Festival, the largest hula competition of its kind in the world, featured kāne (male) hula for the first time in 1976 and Hālau Nā Kamalei won the overall men's award. On their 30th anniversary, Hālau Nā Kamalei O Līlīlehua returned to the Merrie Monarch festival where they won Kāne Kahiko (ancient male hula), Kāne ‘Auana (contemporary male hula), Kane Overall, and the Overall Festival awards. Hālau Nā Kamalei's debut album, RCHNK, was released in 2000 to showcase the talents that Robert expects from his gents regarding ‘oli (chant) and musical composition. Hālau Nā Kamalei was featured in a 2006 full-length documentary Nā Kamalei: Men of Hula, which was also broadcast as part of PBS' Independent Lens series in 2008. In 2010 a book, Men of Hula was successfully published with sales so successful that it received an update and second pressing in 2011. The hālau continues to live by Aunty Maiki's motto: "Hula is the art of Hawaiian dance expressing all that we see, hear, feel, taste, touch and smell; hula is life."

The performance runs one night only; March 14, 2014; at 7:30 PM. The ticket price is $32 (plus a $3/ticket Theatre restoration fee). Proclaimed as the "Pride of the Pacific," the beautiful Hawaii Theatre, built by the Consolidated Amusement Company, opened its doors September 6, 1922 in downtown Honolulu. The Hawaii Theatre operated as a showplace for vaudeville, plays, musicals and silent films until it fell into disrepair and the land lease was abandoned by Consolidated in 1984.

In 1986, the Hawaii Theatre Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation was formed to save the Hawaii Theatre from the wrecking ball and in May 1996, the Hawaii Theatre reopened its doors as a 1400-seat, multi-purpose, state-of-the art performance center.

The Hawaii Theatre was recognized as the 'Outstanding Historic Theatre in America' in 2005 by the League of Historic American Theatres and, in 2006, was awarded an Honor Award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places, the Hawaii Theatre is available for all of Hawaii to enjoy.
