HAWAII THEATRE CENTER TO HOST 29^TH ANNUAL COMBINED MILITARY BAND APPRECIATION CONCERT MAY 17, 2014

Honolulu Council of the Navy League Joins Theatre As Title Sponsor

Honolulu, HI; May 1, 2014: The Hawaii Theatre Center and the Honolulu Council of the Navy League celebrate Military Appreciation Month in May by presenting Honolulu's largest military appreciation event, the 29^th Annual Combined Military Concert at the historic Hawaii Theatre on May 17, 2014 at 6:00 PM. An invitation-only pre-show reception will be sponsored by the Honolulu Council of the Navy League, a title sponsor of the concert.

According to Burton White; Hawaii Theatre Artistic Director, General Manager, and Executive Producer of the event:

"The Hawaii Theatre has been an entertainment destination for the military serving in Hawaiʻi for over 90 years. The Hawaii Theatre continues to honor those who have served, or currently serve, protecting our freedoms and democracy on a day that encourages U.S. citizens to observe as a symbol of patriotic unity."

Honolulu Council of the Navy League Executive Director, Bob McDermott states:

"This event is a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation for our Military and to honor their service. The Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen performing at this event are the best of the best. They represent their service branches with great pride and are accomplished musicians."

This year the United States Air Force is the military lead band and will be conducted by Capt. Haley Armstrong, U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific. The combined band features outstanding services members from each branch of the military, with respective conductors taking up the baton in a selection of patriotic songs. This special concert will feature performances by the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Band, the U.S. Marine Forces Pacific Band, the U.S. Army 25^th Infantry Division Band and members from the Hawaiʻi Air National Guard 11th Army Band.

Tickets are available from the Hawaii Theatre box office, local MWR centers, and the Honolulu Council of the Navy League. The event is free to the public. Public, general admission seating for ticket holders will begin at 5:30 PM. Those without tickets will be admitted at 5:50 PM, depending on available seating.

Ticket and event information is available from the Hawaii Theatre box office located Downtown at 1130 Bethel Street (between Hotel and Pauahi Streets) during regular box office hours; Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Proclaimed as the "Pride of the Pacific," the beautiful Hawaii Theatre, built by the Consolidated Amusement Company, opened its doors September 6, 1922 in downtown Honolulu. The Hawaii Theatre operated as a showplace for vaudeville, plays, musicals and silent films until it fell into disrepair and the land lease was abandoned by Consolidated in 1984.

In 1986, the Hawaii Theatre Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation was formed to save the Hawaii Theatre from the wrecking ball and in May 1996, the Hawaii Theatre reopened its doors as a 1400-seat, multi-purpose, state-of-the art performance center.

The Hawaii Theatre was recognized as the 'Outstanding Historic Theatre in America' in 2005 by the League of Historic American Theatres and, in 2006, was awarded an Honor Award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places, the Hawaii Theatre is available for all of Hawaii to enjoy.
