FIRST THURSDAYS: $100 NATIONALLY CERTIFIED SLAM POETRY COMPETITION AND OPEN MIC... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring Tavana (Acoustic-Blues-Rock-Roots) and the "No Rules" summer. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED. Winner of the night receives $100. LOCATION: Fresh Cafe, 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street), Thursday 8/7/2014, 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm, and $5 after. PRESS RELEASE:
First Thursdays continues its "no rules" summer with another quality show on July 3rd. All team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc. are ALLOWED. However, the 3 minute time limit will still remain in effect.

The special feature for this show is local singer/songwriter Tavana. His blend of acoustic-blues-rock-roots music garnered the attention of Eddie Vedder, beloved front-man for the legendary rock band Pearl Jam. Eddie invited Tavana to perform the Hana Hou (Hawaiian for encore) for his 2-Night Sold-Out Solo Performance Concerts at The Hawaii Theater in July 2009. Their rendition of the iconic island anthem Hawaii '78 (written by Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo`ole, 1978) was so moving for Eddie that he and Pearl Jam released the Live Recording as a Single for their annual Holiday gift to their first 10,000 Fans!! He has performed venues across the U.S. such as Stubb's (Austin), The Shrine (NYC), Skylark Cafe (Seattle), and South by Southwest (Austin).

Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.
