Getting Up Close with Mortality

a special meeting with author Sara Davidson

Sara Davidson is a New York Times best-selling author, who has visited the Hawaii Forgiveness Project on several occasions. She returns, on Friday, February 13.

Her book, The December Project, is a moving account of a relationship she formed with a leading rabbi; she followed him through a deep understanding of mortality, and recorded the process in a series of insightful interviews.

Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, a brilliant and colorful rabbi, called Sara and asked, "When you feel you're coming near the end of your tour of duty," he said, "what is the spiritual work of this time, and how do we prepare for the mystery?"

He wanted to help people "not freak out about dying," and heighten our ability to relish every day.

Reb Zalman felt certain that "something continues." He said he didn't want to convince her of anything. "What I want is to loosen your mind."

They met every Friday for two years.

In her talk in Honolulu, Sara will discuss the rabbi's discovery that forgiveness has three parts: forgiving those who've harmed you; asking forgiveness of those you may have harmed; and, most challenging, forgiving yourself.
