Chinatown Improvement District to launch 2015 Photo Contest

February 1 -- March 15, 2015

Call for Entries

The Chinatown Improvement District, a 501(c3) non-profit, is set to launch a photo contest which will coincide with the annual Chinese Lunar New Years celebrations. Chinatown is a National and State Historic Commercial District steeped in history and culture. In addition to offering a collection of some of the oldest brick, stone and mortar commercial buildings in the state, Chinatown is an exciting neighborhood with diverse businesses, cultural celebrations, marketplaces, residents and visitors. Chinese sundries? Laotian food? Vietnamese noodles? Asian herbalists? Lei Stands? Temples? A Japanese Shrine? You can find it all here in this compact walkable neighborhood.

Shutterbugs will have the opportunity to enter three photos across three categories which celebrate unique aspects of Chinatown:

1. Historic Chinatown

2. Small Business and Creative Entrepreneurs

3. A Feast of the Senses

There will be a Youth Division for entrants ages 8-17. Prizes will be awarded for first place finish in each of the three categories, Best in Show, People's Choice and for the top youth entrant in each of the categories.

The contest will run from February 1st, 2015 through March 15th, 2015. The contest rules, online and mail-in entry forms and more information may all be found at the non-profit's website: CIDChinatownHawaii.org. A $5.00 fee will be charged for each entry to cover the costs of administering the contest. Winners will be announced on April 22nd, a reception will follow and the winning photos will be displayed in Chinatown for free viewing by the general public.

Grab your camera or your phone and come out to explore and capture what makes the area so special. We look forward to seeing the results!

Chinatown Improvement District Projects & Programs

Chinatown Cultural Walking Tours: A joint venture with the Hawaii Heritage Center.

Safe Sidewalks: In collaboration with the Lions Clubs of Honolulu & the City, we worked to patch

and repair sidewalks throughout the Chinatown and Downtown areas. This project prolongs the life of the sidewalks and saves the City time and money as well makes sidewalks safer for thousands of pedestrians on a daily basis. In 2013, this project was selected as one of three Lions Club International World of Service Award Finalists in the category of Outstanding Environmental Impact Project.

Anti Graffiti: Researching products to safely remove and protect historic structures from graffiti.

Hanging Planter Pilot Project: A beautification project in partnership with Chinatown businesses,

residents and the City to hang colorful planters along one block of Chinatown as a test project.

Chinatown Directory: A comprehensive directory and map of all street front businesses within the

Chinatown historic district. Also included are locations of restrooms, ATMs, Bus stops and bike racks. Cultural and historical points of interest are featured on the reverse side. The Chinatown Police Substation and the Hawaii State Library have both solicited copies of the Directory as a public resource.

Wi-fi Reinvigoration: Worked with the City and Chinatown businesses to assist in reinvigorating and

improving wi-fi access across Chinatown.

Adopt-A-Park: Adopted the Smith -- Beretania Street Park and coordinate graffiti and litter clean ups

of the park as of 2012.

Bulletin Boards: Purchased two bulletin boards for the entrance of Maunakea Marketplace. Our

Chinatown directory is on one board and information and news about the marketplace is on the other.

Roving Patrols: Work with interested building owners to provide information on roving security

patrols.
