TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR IONA CONTEMPORARY DANCE THEATRE'S NEW SHOW: DOMINION
***Performances at Hawaii Theatre May 8 -- 10, 2015***
Tickets are on sale now for IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre's world premiere of Dominion, a startling and moving original work by IONA Artistic Director Cheryl Flaharty about animals, humans, and the spirit that binds us.
Three performances will be held at Hawaii Theatre, Friday through Sunday, May 8, 9 and 10, 2015. Just in time to celebrate Hawai‘i's premier dance ensemble's 25th anniversary, Dominion is the Company's first new evening-length work since 2009. Tickets can be purchased directly here: http://www.hawaiitheatre.com/events/dominion-2015-05-08/.
"While Dominion incorporates some very provocative material, the show is as humorous as it is thought provoking -- and stunningly beautiful," said Artistic Director Cheryl Flaharty. "Dominion is a feast for the eyes and nourishment for the heart."
Notorious for its luxuriant costumes, elaborate staging and inspiring imagery, IONA is taking Dominion a step further with the aid of elaborate LED video screens, digital animations, and interactiveGoPro cinema between the performers and audience members. The staging will feature a life-size cage for acrobatics, a seven-foot elephant tusk (reproduction), and other stunning theatrical elements.
Dominion delves into the relationship between humans and animals, the food industry, and the loss of species as aprecursor to human extinction through dance, spoken word, and multi-media imagery. Vibrant contemporary dance pieces detail our playful relationships with domesticated animals and the need for stewardship of wild animals, while fresh produce literally tossed on stage examines our growing interest in sustainable agriculture.
IONA Artistic Director Cheryl Flaharty has created a visual and visceral masterpiece featuring the largest cast ever -- with 25 dancers -- including passionate solo performances by IONA veterans Malia Yamamoto, Summer Partlon, and Sami Akuna.
