FIRST THURSDAYS: $100 NATIONALLY CERTIFIED SLAM POETRY COMPETITION AND OPEN MIC... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring Pages Matam (2-time National Slam Champion) and the "No Rules" Summer. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED. Winner of the night receives $100. LOCATION: Fresh Cafe Kaka`ako, 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street), Thursday 5/7/2015, 8:30pm. After an extremely successful twelfth Anniversary/Finals show, HawaiiSlam's First Thursdays is proud to present it's 13th year of poetry slams!! Our show on May 7th will kick off our "No Rules" summer, where all team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc. are ALLOWED. However, the 3 minute time limit will still remain in effect. Ê
The special feature for the show is Pages Matam, an educator & touring artist who resides in the D.C. metropolitan area, but is originally from Cameroon, Africa. He is a 2-time National Slam Champion and author of The Heart of a Comet (Write Bloody, 2014) which was named Book of the year in 2014 by beltway Poetry Quarterly. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will also feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.
Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at
