Honolulu HI - The ARTS at Marks Garage is offering two engaging programs for teens to engage them in hands-on development of arts projects that will be displayed for public viewing in the downtown/Chinatown neighborhood.

The two different programs are: an afterschool program which takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30PM -- 5:30PM until March 10, 2016, and Spring Break Camp, which will take place from 10:00AM -- 3:00PM, March 16-18 and March 21-25, 2016.

In the afterschool program, teens will be creating small-scale art installations. These miniatures scenes will be installed as street-art throughout Chinatown as we explore the impact of art in public spaces.

In Spring Break Camp, teens will work with a professional local artist in the creation of monumental-sized murals used as the backdrops for the Hawaii Theatre Concerts.

All teens (13-18) are welcome but space is limited. Email youth@artsatmarks.com to reserve space.

These programs are taught by Christie Knoll, in coordination with Rich Richardson.

"I tell the kids: ‘we are ALL artists, we just use different mediums to express ourselves'" Christie says. "They seem to get it."

Christie T. Knoll is owner of Roping the Moon Studio, a mix media art space. She earned a BA in Studio Art at the University of West Florida and a Masters in Art Education from the College of Fine Arts at the University of Florida. She is passionate about the role art education can play in the lives of youth, and has dedicated over 20 years developing art based curriculum in out-of-school settings. Her desire to teach art outside of traditional school setting stems from her experiences with limited access to art education after being diagnosed with dyslexia during her formative years. Her art and teaching style focuses on the creative process leading to self-discovery and a larger understanding of community, culture and society.

Rich Richardson is Executive Director of Hawaii Academy of Performing Arts and The ARTS at Marks Garage. He is founder of Chinatown Artists Lofts, and cofounder of First Friday Honolulu. He has a master's degree of Creative Arts Interdisciplinary Studies from San Francisco State University and has been a working artist in Hawaii for over 20 years. Honolulu Magazine, profiled him as …living proof of the theory that art builds communities, in 6 People Making a Difference in Honolulu.
