Chinese Celebrate Moon Festival on Sept. 9th and 10th

The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and the United Chinese Society present the second Moon Festival in Hawaii on Friday, September 9th from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday, September 10th from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza located at 100 N. Beretania Street. The event is free and open to the public.

Festivities include a colorful lantern display and parade, live entertainment, moon cake eating contest, food and craft vendors, Chinese lion dancing and more. There also will be a Department of Health community booth, and Dr. Wendell Foo and his team will also provide free blood pressure checks to the public.

The Moon Cake Eating Contest takes place Saturday, Sept. 10th at 2 p.m. Grand prize is 1-year supply of Pepsi, second place is six months supply of Pepsi, and third place receives three months supply of Pepsi. Limited to 10 contestants per event. Participants must be at least 18 years old. To enter, call 533-3181 by Sept. 8th.

There also will be a Moon Cake, Tea & Dim Sum Tasting event on Saturday, Sept. 10th from 10 a.m. to noon at Empress Seafood Restaurant. Enjoy one-of-a-kind moon cakes from China, Taiwan and the United States. Learn about moon cakes and teas in this delicious event. Tickets are $200 for a table of 10 or $25 individually. It can be purchased from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce at 533-3181 or visit www.chinesechamber.com.

A free Lantern Making class also takes place Sunday, Sept. 11th from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the United Chinese Society Hall. First 50 registrants only. Children must be 14 years and older. To sign up, please contact the Chinese Chamber of Commerce at 533-3181.
