HPU Young Actors Ensemble
2017 - 2018
The Hawaii Pacific University Young Actors Ensemble is dedicated to offering intensive classical theatre training in a positive, non-competitive environment. YAE-trained alumni have gone on to study theatre in college and to become professional actors, stage managers, fight choreographers, and filmmakers. Membership is by prepared audition--a 1-2 minute memorized monologue from any published play.
Auditions for the Ensemble will be held Saturday, June 17; Saturday, July 15; and Saturday, August 19, all at 1pm, and all onstage at the Paul and Vi Loo Theatre, on the HPU Hawaii Loa Campus.
Students must register at least one week prior to the date they would like to audition, by emailing either
elmjellinek@gmail.com or edenlee.murray@hpu.edu
Classes are held in town, at 1060 Bishop Street, where the students meet twice a week with Eden Lee Murray, an award-winning actor, director, and artist/educator. In addition, they are offered Master Classes from leading instructors in the theatre community. Master Classes for the 2017 - 2018 year will include: Voice for Theatre with top musical theatre artist Shari Lynn; Intro to Mask Work and Playing Shakespeare with internationally known professional actor/director Paul Mitri; Stage Combat with international stage/film fight choreographer, and producer of the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival, Tony Pisculli; The Art of Physical Comedy with professional actor/educator Walter Gaines, Poetry in Performance with national champion slam poet Bridget Gray, and Improvisation with former member of Second City, Shannon Winpenny. The 9-month long training program culminates in the spring with a full Shakespeare play onstage at the Paul and Vi Loo Theatre at HPU. The 2017 production was a deliciously hilarious, faery-driven interpretation of Midsummer Night's Dream.
The 2018 spring production will be The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, dubbed by G. Bernard Shaw as "the most splendidly written political melodrama we possess." There will be obvious overtones in connection with current affairs.
