FY17 Annual Report: Art is Education
The fiscal year 2017 (July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017) Annual Report for the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts has been published. The PDF and supplemental information can be read online: SFCA Annual Report FY17.
This annual report reflects a new way of looking at the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and our accomplishments. For this report, our core foundation pillars are presented not by program, but collectively, giving readers a comprehensive picture of our work. We hope you enjoy the fresh perspective and find the information more accessible than ever.
Fiscal Year 2017 (July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017) was a year of transition for the SFCA, its staff, and our community. We focused on building a stronger agency by maximizing use of existing revenue streams, expanding programs to the neighbor islands, and reaffirming relationships within the agency as well as with other state/county agencies and the Legislature.

The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts offers a four part standards-based museum education program for Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) Oahu second- through sixth-grade students and their teachers, with an introductory professional development session for teachers. Students then engage with the teaching artist in an artmaking lesson, explore "I Love Art Gallery" hands-on activities and tour the HiSAM galleries. There is no cost to schools to participate in the program. In addition, the program also provides funds for bus transportation to the museum. Deadline for applications: March 9, 2018. Art in Public Places: It's Your Art
The Spirit of Mānoa: In the Light of Day / Rick Mills / cast glass sculpture / 2015 / Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts / Mānoa Public Library
Approximately 3 miles from downtown Honolulu and 2 miles from the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa, the recently rebuilt Mānoa Public Library is home to The Spirit of Mānoa: In the Light of Day, a cast-glass sculpture designed specifically for the library by artist and professor Rick Mills. The residential neighborhood of Mānoa's rich and fertile environment, noted for its plentiful rainfall and wind, served as inspiration for this work of art. These five mountain-like forms are an abstract depiction of the interior of Mānoa Valley, referred to as ‘Aka‘aka (laughter) and Waiakeakua (the water of the god).
When asked to reflect on his thoughts about the sculpture recently, Mills said "I think it's interesting how a sculpture changes, or better said, how my ideas about the sculpture have changed. Physically the perception of it has changed... the palms outside are now as tall as the 2nd floor and give a deep green background to theglass, and the sculpture seems to have been absorbed into the building and become a part of its new history. I'm happy it's been so well received by the community. I felt and still feel so fortunate to have this opportunity to create this sculpture."
Rick Mills received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 1986. Mills is a glass and metal sculptor who has served as Professor of Art at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa since 1989.

Art Lunch: Lynn Cook, Kiʻi Pohaku
Kiʻi Pohaku -- History, Written in Stone
Inspired by the discovery and recording of petroglyph art created by voyagers who first discovered the Hawaiian Islands, artist and journalist Lynn Cook will tell the story of her own life on the rocks.
Age seven, she was spotting rocks -- on the bow of her uncle's fishing boat, somewhere off the Canadian Gulf Islands. She spotted a face looking up at her. She did what any curious seven-year old would do -- she fell overboard to get a better look. Since that first encounter with an ancient petroglyph, Cook has followed her muse -- art carved in stone. Some of that art is only a few hundred years old, other carvings are many thousands of years old.
