SFCA Strategic Plan

The priorities set forth are reflective of broad community input and the good thinking of the SFCA Commissioners and staff. In adopting these priorities and accompanying strategies, the SFCA intends to strengthen existing programs and services, pursue new initiatives, embrace a culture of transparency and accountability, and set and meet benchmarks that communicate our intentions clearly to our staff, partners, and the broader community.

2018 Teaching Artist Institute Video

Produced by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth with grant funding from the Hawaii Community Foundation, this short film is directed towards the Teaching Artist (TA) and explores ideas of cultivating a common language, modeling visual arts and performing arts, intentional design, and most effective implementation of professional development workshops in an arts integrated setting.

The Teaching Artist Institute is part of the SFCA's Professional Development commitment for Teaching Artists, who are required to participate in annual professional development in order to maintain active status on the Artistic Teaching Partners Roster. This year the SFCA partnered with the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, and provided funding for presenters. On March 23, fifty Teaching Artists came to the Hawaii State Art Museum to learn a framework for designing and conducting high quality professional development experiences in arts integration for classroom teachers. All Teaching Artists on the Artistic Teaching Partners Roster benefited from this day with presenters Dan Kelin, Evan Anderson, Jamie Simpson Steele and Justin Davies.

Statewide Cultural Extension Program

The Statewide Cultural Extension Program (SCEP) is a part of the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa Outreach College, and offers the artistry of international national, and local artists and cultural experts to communities across the state. Programs range from The Art of Cartooning to Taiko Drumming and are usually offered in conjunction with co-sponsoring organizations such as libraries, schools, senior centers, nursing homes, parks, prisons, and community centers. Interested groups in the community may request performances, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, and residencies from SCEP's roster of artists and cultural experts. This program is supported by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi and by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the purchase of works of art, including the review, nomination, evaluation and selection of the recommended artworks for acquisition. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

Hawaiʻi State Art Museum

TEMPORARY GALLERY CLOSURE

The Diamond Head gallery, including the I Love Art hands-on activity area and the "EMPHASIZED: eye on scale" exhibit will be temporarily closed July 8 - August 2, 2018. The ‘Ewa gallery ("HAWAI‘I: Change & Continuity" exhibit) and the Sculpture Lobby will remain open.

ARTIZEN by MW HAS RE-OPENED

The Artizen by MW cafe has re-opened with an updated menu. Monday - Friday, Breakfast 7:30 - 10:30 a.m., lunch 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Menu is posted daily at www.artizenbymw.com. (808) 524-0499.

Visitor Information

Each summer since 2010, Blue Star Museums have offered free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The 2018 program runs from Saturday, May 26, 2018 to Monday, September 3, 2018. Blue Star Museums is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America.

Hawai‘i participants this year include Iolani Palace, Lyon Arboretum, and the Honolulu Museum of Art on Oahu, and the Lyman Museum on Hawai‘i Island. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum in downtown Honolulu is free for everyone all year.

The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as Visual Arts Consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees.The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendationsto the SFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project,including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of theartist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and makerecommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The SFCA appoints thecommittee members for each exhibit visit -- generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members,and Visual Arts Consultants. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum (operated by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts) is looking for enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers to assist museum visitors and help offer a greater understanding of the exhibitions currently on view. If you have an interest or background in the arts, we encourage you to volunteer.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

• Gallery Attendant -- Assist visitors in the galleries.

• Info Desk Attendant -- Greet and orient visitors to the museum.

• Docent -- Conduct tours of the exhibitions.

• Education Assistant -- Assist with education programs.

• Special Events Assistant -- Assist staff in event coordination.

• General Clerical Help -- Assist staff in office chores.

The Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (Friends of HiSAM) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization established to work effectively with the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA), which operates the museum, and its professional staff to enhance and support the work of the museum, its ancillary programs, and amenities.

In supporting the mission of the SFCA, the Friends of HiSAM have four objectives: (1) expose and engage all grade school students at the museumto the arts in Hawai‘i, (2) encourage all high schooland college students who are focused on the arts through meaningful events and programs at the museum (3) expose, excite, educate and engage those living in and visiting our state to the art and artists of Hawai‘i through visits to the museum, and (4) assist the SFCA in the recognition of Hawaii's art and artists. Most recently, Friends of HiSAM has hosted exhibits of local artists in the museum restaurant, Artizen by MW: Harry Tsuchidana: Forgotten Paintings; Across Generations, featuring Satoru Abe, Hamilton Kobayashi, and Kainoa Gruspe; Across Generations II, featuring Ka-Ning Fong and Erin Marquez; Yvonne Cheng: Recent Works; The 2017 HiSAM Portfolio Artists Show; Across Generations: Charles Higa and Michael Teruya; and the Hawaii Master Artists Show. Friends of HiSAM has also hosted a soft opening for the new museum shop, HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x MORI.

The museum cafe and museum shop are independently operated under a lease agreement between the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Accounting and General Services.
