For more than fifty years, the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts has been recognized as one of the most significant collections of contemporary art of Hawaiʻi. This exhibit invites you to engage with a selection of recent additions to the collection from across the Hawaiian Islands. The thirty-one artworks acquired from eighteen exhibitions offer an insight into current trends and themes in the local arts scene and provides an opportunity to see the diversity of works being created in Hawaiʻi today. SFCA Executive Director Jonathan Johnson says "this exhibit is what's going on in Hawaiʻi through the eyes of artists."

Opening reception at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum on Friday, August 3, 2018, 6:00 -- 9:00 p.m. during the free, family-friendly First Friday event upstairs in the second floor Sculpture Lobby, with live performances by Shoji Ledward (acoustic guitar). The opening reception is free and open to the public.

The museum cafe, Artizen by MW, and the museum gift shop, HiSAM Gallery Shop x MORI will also be open, with live entertainment by Bridgefinder and Aloha Got Soul. The Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum will be hosting a bar with wine and beer, as well as an opening reception for their Hawaiʻi Artists 2018 Portfolio Project. Valet parking is available at the Richards St. entrance to the building.

This piece by Masami Teraoka is two artworks in one: open, it displays a three-part painting inspired by his work in Hawaiʻi with Russian performance art group Pussy Riot. Closed, it depicts a childhood memory of seeing two suns in the sky one morning as he walked to school, one from the east and one from the west. Later, he realized that the second sun he saw was the atomic bomb that had been dropped on Hiroshima. Teraoka's works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Tate in London. This piece was acquired from the "Angels and Transgressors" exhibit at the Koa Gallery (Kapiolani Community College, Honolulu).

One of a series of works produced for the Honolulu Biennial 2017, this ceramic vessel is meant to embody the lightning form of the Hawaiian god Kane. A graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama, Kūpaʻa is a conservationist with the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources. "Known as the god of man, Kāne is often associated with light, lightning, water and the sun. Kānehekili was imagined to be a being that was split between dark and light evoking the duality of thunder and lightning. So too is the piece dark and light. The faint designs within each half are meant to represent lightning with angular motifs and clouds with curvilinear motifs." -- Charlton Kūpaʻa Hee

Ogata, Nisha Pinjani, Hiroko Sakurai, Marilee Salvator, Jennifer Stephens, Jonathan Swanz, Mark Tanabe, Masami Teraoka, Lori Uyehara, David Valdez, and Hana Yoshihata.

Artworks in this exhibit were acquired by the Art in Public Places Program of the SFCA through exhibit and artist studio visits. The art selection process involves Acquisition Award Selection Committees (AASCs), composed of Visual Arts Consultants, SFCA board members, and SFCA staff. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the purchase of works of art, including the review, nomination, evaluation and selection of the recommended artworks for acquisition. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

Hawaiʻi State Art Museum

TEMPORARY GALLERY CLOSURE

The Diamond Head gallery, including the I Love Art hands-on activity area and the "EMPHASIZED: eye on scale" exhibit will be temporarily closed July 8 - August 2, 2018. The ‘Ewa gallery ("HAWAI‘I: Change & Continuity" exhibit) and the Sculpture Lobby will remain open. The Diamond Head gallery re-opens on Friday, August 3, with the new "STATE OF ART: new work" exhibit at the front of the gallery.

Visitor Information

Each summer since 2010, Blue Star Museums have offered free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The 2018 program runs from Saturday, May 26, 2018 to Monday, September 3, 2018. Blue Star Museums is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America.

Hawai‘i participants this year include Iolani Palace, Lyon Arboretum, and the Honolulu Museum of Art on Oahu, and the Lyman Museum on Hawai‘i Island. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum in downtown Honolulu is free for everyone all year.

The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as Visual Arts Consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees.The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendationsto the SFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project,including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of theartist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and makerecommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The SFCA appoints thecommittee members for each exhibit visit -- generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members,and Visual Arts Consultants. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum (operated by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts) is looking for enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers to assist museum visitors and help offer a greater understanding of the exhibitions currently on view. If you have an interest or background in the arts, we encourage you to volunteer.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

Gallery Attendant -- Assist visitors in the galleries.
Info Desk Attendant -- Greet and orient visitors to the museum.
Docent -- Conduct tours of the exhibitions.
Education Assistant -- Assist with education programs.
Special Events Assistant -- Assist staff in event coordination.
General Clerical Help -- Assist staff in office chores.

The Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (Friends of HiSAM) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization established to work effectively with the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA), which operates the museum, and its professional staff to enhance and support the work of the museum, its ancillary programs, and amenities.

In supporting the mission of the SFCA, the Friends of HiSAM have four objectives: (1) expose and engage all grade school students at the museumto the arts in Hawai‘i, (2) encourage all high schooland college students who are focused on the arts through meaningful events and programs at the museum (3) expose, excite, educate and engage those living in and visiting our state to the art and artists of Hawai‘i through visits to the museum, and (4) assist the SFCA in the recognition of Hawaii's art and artists. Most recently, Friends of HiSAM has hosted exhibits of local artists in the museum restaurant, Artizen by MW: Harry Tsuchidana: Forgotten Paintings; Across Generations, featuring Satoru Abe, Hamilton Kobayashi, and Kainoa Gruspe; Across Generations II, featuring Ka-Ning Fong and Erin Marquez; Yvonne Cheng: Recent Works; The 2017 HiSAM Portfolio Artists Show; Across Generations: Charles Higa and Michael Teruya; the Hawaii Master Artists Show; and Hawai‘i Artists 2018 Portfolio Project. Friends of HiSAM has also hosted a soft opening for the new museum shop, HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x MORI.

The museum cafe and museum shop are independently operated under a lease agreement between the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Accounting and General Services.

Correction

In the July 2018 email newsletter, in the information about the Arts Integration Framework (2018 Teaching Artist Institute Video) it was stated that "This year the SFCA partnered with the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, and provided funding for presenters." It should have read "This year SFCA and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY) co-funded the Teaching Artist Institute." HTY provided the funding for the presenters on two out of three days of the institute.

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is dedicated to presenting the largest and finest collection of works by Hawai'i artists that celebrate the diverse artistic and cultural legacy of Hawai'i.

OUR MISSION
To promote, perpetuate, preserve and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawai`i. HSFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai`i and the National Endowment for the Arts. The HSFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services.

HOURS:
The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.
