It's Your Art: Art in Public Places

4d4372c7-de9f-403c-97ef-d8775916dd22.jpg

"I as an individual and you as an individual can make a difference." - Patsy T. Mink

Patsy T. Mink, a bronze sculpture by Holly Young, has been installed in front of the main branch of the Hawaii State Public Library in Honolulu.

The 2013 Legislature passed Act 281 appropriating funds for the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to commission a permanent, three dimensional work of art to portray the life, vision, accomplishments, impact, and legacy of the late United States Representative Patsy T. Mink so as to properly honor her memory and to utilize her example as an inspiration for current and future generations.

United States Representative Mink served a total of twelve terms over the span of her political career from 1956 to 2002 representing Hawaii's First and Second Congressional Districts. She was the first woman of color to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and co-authored the Title IX - Amendment of the Higher Education Act which was eventually renamed in her honor as the "Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act." On November 24, 2014, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

Patsy T. Mink is a 1.2 life-size scale bronze sculpture of Patsy Mink standing and speaking with arms outstretched to symbolize her love and engagement of Hawai‘i's community. It is located in a seating area near the Hawai‘i State Public Library where she spent much of her early career reading to her daughter, Wendy Mink. Throughout the seating area are plaques containing quotes from Patsy Mink's political career that highlight her tireless advocacy for civil rights, women's rights, and the integrity of the democratic process.

The Exhibit Specialist team was on Kaua‘i in October, doing an island-wide Art in Public Places artwork rotation. Previously installed artworks were removed and shipped back to Honolulu, and artworks selected by the state offices and buildings were installed.

Biennium Grants Applications

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts FY2020-2021 Biennium Grants applications will launch in January 2019.

The applications will be on a new temporary electronic format. This grants cycle is a transition as the SFCA will be procuring a new software system and developing a grants management system to manage all the SFCA grants including Biennium Grants, Artists in the Schools, Art Bento HiSAM education programming, Fellowships, Culture Learning, Professional Development, Folk and Traditional Arts Culture Grants, Apprentice Mentoring, and all others.

The intent of the change is to simplify the process for the grant applicant and streamline management of the grants resulting in cost savings which will be made available for additional grant funding.

The general timeline of the FY20-21 Biennium Grants process:

January/February 2019 Launch Application

March 2019 Applications Due

April 2019 Panel Review

May 2019 Board Approval

June 2019 Notification of Awards

This is the first major change to the Biennium Grants application process since 2005 and we hope that you will join us in this important and exciting transition.

Call for Schools: 2019 Poetry Out Loud

941d5746-ce37-4ef7-a2c7-e63c80674bf3.png

During the fall and winter school season, September 2018 -- January 2019, schools are invited to participate in classroom and school wide contests, advancing to a state competition on Sunday February 24, 2019. State champions will advance to the national finals, to take place on April 30--May 1, 2019, in Washington, DC.

The program encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high school students across the country. Poetry Out Loud helps students to develop analytical and public speaking skills, while building self-confidence.

"In today's tumultuous world, poetry is a space for youth to find and use their voice in a powerful way," said Poetry Foundation President Henry Bienen. "Students involved in Poetry Out Loud spend time with the poems they recite, learning to see them from many angles. That deepened connection makes poetry an extension of young people's lives and experiences that they are eager to share."

High schools that wish to be part of the official Poetry Out Loud program must contact Honolulu Theatre for Youth by January 11, 2019 to participate. Honolulu Theatre for Youth will work with interested schools to include them in the official Poetry Out Loud program. Schools that are not in the official program may conduct their own contests using the online resources. Contact Tamara Smith at (808) 839-9885 extension 704 or visit www.poetryoutloud.org for more information.
