Aloha 2019!

As the new year begins, many of us are thinking of starting fresh, of new opportunities, of doing more with what we have, and reflecting on possibilities. In the spirit of renewal and possibility, our theme for the spring at The ARTS will be RE-Definition. Let's think differently. Let's see things in a new light. Sometimes all you need is a new perspective to move forward.

We have an amazing line up for January. Artist Eri Kawano Irwinʻs exhibit, "Us" examines societal challenges found in Hawaiʻi and the distracting influence of commercial beauty surrounding us. R. Zamora Linmark's ground-breaking play, Rolling the R's, will delight you, challenge you, and make you see a side of Hawaii that you may never have seen before. The Oahu Fringe Festival showcases ground breaking and new material by emerging artists and stage veterans. And we round out the month with internationally acclaimed teacher and performer, Aitor Basauri, and Hā Hā Hawai`i bringing the art of physical comedy to our audiences.

Visit us at the ARTS this month as we re-new, re-think, and re-define our perspectives.

Wishing you a bright and happy 2019!

From all of us at The ARTS at Marks,

Reiko Ho

Eri Kawano Irwin, pen and colored pencil

January 2-26

When one first experiences Hawaiʻi, sheer beauty is often the initial impression. Upon closer examination, that beauty is revealed as a façade distracting us from the societal challenges surrounding us: poverty, homelessness, discrimination (gender, racial, national, etc.) and so on. Upon this realization, Eri Kawano Irwin concentrated on these challenges, yet some aspect of beauty -- natural surroundings, beautiful people and distinct architecture -- always emerged. Read more

ROLLING THE R'S, a play by R. Zamora Linmark & Directed by Reiko Ho

Kailua Onstage Arts & The ARTS at Marks Garage

January 4-6 & 18-20, 7:30 PM, Sunday Shows at 2 PM

Set in Kalihi in the disco years of the late '70s, when high school students hung posters of Scott Baio and Shaun Cassidy on the walls, read Teen Beat magazine, and listened to Peaches and Herb on cassette tapes. Edgar Ramirez, a Kalihi teenager "who looks like a Filipino John Travolta," is gay and faces down the taunts from his peers. Edgar and his friends Katrina and Vicente along with their classmates, dream, explore their sexuality, and struggle to define their ethnic identities in a non-linear, surrealistic, sometimes brutal story punctuated by the authoritarian voice of schoolteacher, Mrs. Takemoto, and the judgmental gossiping of Philippine-born friends Mrs. Cayabyab and Mrs. Arayat.
