Lei making is a Hawaiian custom and art form that most often involves flowers, but can also include leaves, sea shells, nuts, fruits, and more recently, candy and even dollar bills. Making floral lei often requires great care in finding the flowers and assembling them together. When a lei is presented to someone, it is said that the mana (spirit) of the lei maker is passed onto the wearer.
Since the 1920s, May 1st has been designated as "Lei Day" in Hawaiʻi. Each year there are numerous celebrations, parades, and competitions in lei making with specific flowers. However, giving lei is an important Hawaiian tradition during special occasions throughout the year - greetings, farewells, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and so on.
