SFCA Loans to the Volcano Art Center
"Pele's Dream" bronze sculpture by Jean Bruce and "Atoll, Toll, Total" by Fred Roster are currently on loan from the SFCA to the Volcano Art Center's Ni‘aulani Sculpture Garden. The Volcano Art Center's newest sculpture garden exhibition "Interplay: Art Science," also features the works of eight local sculptors: Clayton Amemiya, Henry Bianchini, Stephen Freedman, Elizabeth Miller, Michael Shewmaker, Erin Skelton, Jonathan Sudler and EMSY. The King Kamehameha I sculpture in front of Ali’iolani Hale was conserved. This work is part of a State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) contract with RLA (formerly Rosa Lowinger & Associates) that includes conservation work on several sculptures in the Art in Public Places Collection across the state. This contract also includes training sessions for Hawaiʻi-based organizations and contractors (Honolulu Museum of Art, Honolulu Mayor’s Office on Culture and the Arts, Martin & Macarthur, and private contractors).

2019 Poetry Out Loud National Finals

The 2019 Poetry Out Loud National Finals were held April 30-May 1, 2019 at the Lisner Auditorium at The George Washington University. Hawaii’s 2019 Poetry Out Loud state champion, Maggie Odom, was of nine students who advanced to the final round. Maggie was also a runner-up in the written category of Poetry Ourselves.  Poetry Out Loud is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts and provides funding to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to support the program. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the purchase of works of art, including the review, nomination, evaluation and selection of the recommended artworks for acquisition. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

eProcurement
For doing business with the state as a contractor, the State of Hawaii eProcurement (HiePro) is a system for issuing solicitations, receiving responses, and issuing notices of award. Solicitations and awards are posted and searchable. State Foundation on Culture and the Arts solicitations have included graphic design services, printing services, custom framing, artwork conservation and restoration.To find SFCA solicitations, search under Department: Accounting and General Services (the SFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services).

Help the SFCA Select Artwork
The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as Visual Arts Consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees. The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project, including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of the artist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and make recommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The SFCA appoints the committee members for each exhibit visit — generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and Visual Arts Consultants. Volunteer at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum
The Hawai‘i State Art Museum (operated by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts) is looking for enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers to assist museum visitors and help offer a greater understanding of the exhibitions currently on view. If you have an interest or background in the arts, we encourage you to volunteer.
Volunteers are needed in the following areas:
Gallery Attendant – Assist visitors in the galleries.
Info Desk Attendant – Greet and orient visitors to the museum.
Docent – Conduct tours of the exhibitions.
Education Assistant – Assist with education programs.
Special Events Assistant – Assist staff in event coordination.
General Clerical Help – Assist staff in office chores.

State Art Museum
The Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (Friends of HiSAM) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization established to work effectively with the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA), which operates the museum, and its professional staff to enhance and support the work of the museum, its ancillary programs, and amenities.

The museum cafe and museum shop are independently operated under a lease agreement between the
Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Accounting and General Services.

Creative Lab Hawai‘i
Founded in 2012 by the State of Hawaii’s Creative Industries Division, Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT), Creative Lab Hawai‘i provides a rich environment for creative collaboration and building new business relationships with a global audience. 

Creative Lab Hawaii offers public panels, workshops, and hands on coaching and mentoring by industry leaders in areas of Screenwriting, New Media, Broadband, Producing, Directing, Songwriting/Music, Technology, the Business of Acting, and Design/Fashion.

2017 State of Hawai‘i Data Book
The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) has released the 2017 edition of the “State of Hawai‘i Data Book.”
The book is in electronic form and is available on the DBEDT website at:
dbedt.hawaii.gov/economic/databook. The data may be downloaded in whole or in part as either PDF or Excel files.
The state’s Data Book is the most comprehensive statistical book about Hawai‘i in a single compilation. With more than 800 data tables, classified into 24 sections, it covers a broad range of statistical information in areas such as population, education, environment, economics, energy, business enterprises, government, tourism and transportation.
“The Data Book is the most popular item on the DBEDT website, and this year marks the 50th edition,” said DBEDT Director Luis P. Salaveria. “DBEDT researchers collected and compiled data from all private and public sources about all aspects of Hawaii and put them together to create this comprehensive source of information for anyone who wants to know Hawaii.”
Section 7, Recreation and Travel, includes information on Performing Arts, Symphony Orchestra Activities, and Attendance at Museums and other Cultural Attractions.

Statewide Cultural Extension Program
The Statewide Cultural Extension Program (SCEP) is a part of the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa Outreach College, and offers the artistry of international national, and local artists and cultural experts to communities across the state. Programs range from The Art of Cartooning to Taiko Drumming and are usually offered in conjunction with co-sponsoring organizations such as libraries, schools, senior centers, nursing homes, parks, prisons, and community centers. Interested groups in the community may request performances, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, and residencies from SCEP’s roster of artists and cultural experts. This program is supported by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi and by the National Endowment for the Arts.
