Construction of new dog park beginning at Kalo Place Mini Park

New facility part of private public partnership with Hawaiian Humane Society

MAKIKI -- Construction of a new off-leash dog park at Kalo Place Mini Park is beginning next week thanks to a public-private partnership.

Through a gift donation by the Hawaiian Humane Society, the project involves the construction of a fenced, off-leash dog park with areas for both small and large dogs.

The $275,000 gift was accepted by the city through Resolution 19-93 adopted by the City Council earlier this year.

As a result of the new construction work, the closure of the mini park will be extended through Friday, August 30. The initial closure of the park was announced in April.

"It is such a win-win situation when community organizations help with the improvement of park areas that benefit the public," said Department of Parks and Recreation Director Michele Nekota. "Mahalo to the Hawaiian Humane Society for being great neighbors of this park and for their generous gift."

The dog park hours will reflect those of Kalo Place Mini Park, which is closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
