HONOLULU – Mayor Caldwell today announced a partnership between the city’s Department of Community Services, The Legal Clinic, and UNITE HERE Local 5 to promote a year-round effort to help immigrants in Hawaiʻi become naturalized or gain U.S. citizenship.

“People have been coming to our shores to pursue the American dream for over a century, where they can work for a better life for themselves and their families,” said Mayor Caldwell. “People continue to arrive, and I think that dream is even stronger now than before. It lives and thrives in all of its different manifestations, as seen through the diversity of the people who live in the City and County of Honolulu. So how do we improve our outreach to our immigrant communities? This partnership with The Legal Clinic and UNITE HERE Local 5 is a big step in answering that question.”
Honolulu’s partnership with these local organizations is possible because of a grant of $45,000 provided by the The Cities for Citizenship initiative. The American Immigration Council estimates that 50,000 people in Hawaiʻi are eligible for naturalization. Two O‘ahu residents who recently became U.S. citizens joined Mayor Caldwell for today’s press conference.
This national program aims to increase citizenship among U.S. residents who are eligible for naturalization. The program is spearheaded by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
