Self-Service Kiosks Remain Quickest Way To Renew Vehicle Registration
- Tweet
The DMV Now kiosk at Kapahulu Safeway was unveiled in February 2019.
Efforts over the past year to make it quicker and easier for O‘ahu motorists to renew a vehicle registration have been getting a key boost from the self-service kiosks that operate much like an ATM.
The free-standing terminals, which are the latest of four ways to renew a vehicle registration, debuted at select Safeway stores one year ago this month in February 2019.
Since then, the machines have processed and printed more than 36,500 vehicle registration cards and emblems.
The kiosks, which enable residents to use a touchscreen to renew their vehicle registration in a matter of minutes, are also helping shorten lines at satellite city halls.
“We are working to improve the way our residents access basic government services like renewing a vehicle registration,” said Customer Services Director Sheri Kajiwara. “We want to eliminate the need to stand in line.”
Among key advantages of the kiosks is that these machines are available 24/7, will print registration cards and stickers on site, and accept renewals up to 10 months past the expiration date. Late registrations are assessed a standard $16 fee. All renewals require that a current safety inspection be on file. Residents can also renew a vehicle registration online or by mail, but these options are unable to calculate any late fees and require a 10-to 15-day wait to receive the card and emblem by mail.
The kiosks are located at the following Safeway stores:
•Kapahulu Safeway, 888 Kapahulu Ave.
•South Beretania Street Safeway, 1234 S. Beretania St.
•Kāne‘ohe Bay Shopping Center, 46-065 Kamehameha Hwy
•Kapolei Shopping Center, 590 Farrington Hwy
•Waimalu Plaza Shopping Center, 98-1277 Ka‘ahumanu St.
