Winners awarded with gift baskets and certificates for their outstanding and patriotic portrayals
HAWAI‘I – The City and County of Honolulu and the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) are proud to announce the winners of this year’s Mayor’s Memorial Day Poster Contest!
Hundreds of students from across the state entered posters into this year’s contest, and we congratulate this years’s outstanding student artists. Additional congratulations to Kaua‘i, whose students swept the high school division, capturing the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place honors!
Although the 71st Mayor’s Memorial Day Ceremony scheduled for Monday, May 25 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl / Pūowaina) was cancelled, the City and DPR are recognizing the poster contest winners by sending them a prize basket and a certificate of appreciation. Their artwork is also posted on DPR’s dedicated Mayor’s Memorial Day Ceremony website: bit.ly/PunchbowlMemorialDay
“Even though this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony at Punchbowl has been cancelled out of concerns for COVID-19, we encourage everyone to take a moment on Memorial Day to remember those who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice for our benefit,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “Now more than ever, we need to recognize and remember our brave first responders and service members who selflessly put their lives on the line to protect us.”
There will be no formal ceremony recognizing the winners of this year’s poster contest, nor will the posters be printed into flyers in support of the Sew a Lei for Memorial Day effort. All Sew a Lei for Memorial Day events are cancelled.
Mahalo to all of the schools, teachers, and students who participated in this year’s contest.
