The ARTS at Marks Garage - SEPTEMBER 2020 Update

Aloha Mai Kākou–
Well, this is feeling familiar …
I hope Oʻahu's second lockdown finds you and your families healthy and safe. We may not be able to have folks in the gallery for another few weeks, but we’re determined to keep spotlighting local artists, and to keep bringing beauty and joy your way despite the pandemic.
This month, our gallery is proud to feature the collage work of Honolulu artist Jeff Gere. Although Jeff is well known around town as a performer and storyteller — he was a part of the very first show presented at ARTS@MARKS! — he’s a terrific visual artist as well. The precision and detail of his work is so fine that at first glance it looks as if it might be digital collage; but all of his pieces are painstakingly handmade from paper. We’ve posted reproductions of his evocative work in the gallery windows, and we’ll hang the originals if we’re able to open the gallery before the end of the month. In the meantime, all of the works are visible in the "Quarantine Queens & Corona Goddesses" Virtual Gallery on our website — and if you find something you love, you can purchase it right in our online store!
In October, we’ll be featuring the “Little Pictures Show” by our artistic partner, Hawai‘i Watercolor Society. This annual tradition features a huge number of small works in a variety of watercolor styles, and we’re looking forward to having HWS in our space again. More details to come!
Theatre, dance, and other live events are still tricky, of course; but we’re working on ways to bring live performance to you in a way that keeps everyone safe. I’m looking forward to being able to share more information with you soon.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t encourage you to consider joining our 1001 Friends giving program. Times are tight for all of us, I know; but the $10 per month–or whatever you can afford — combines with funding from our other generous donors to provide a steady stream of income that’s crucial to keeping our doors open during the pandemic.
Thanks so much for all your support of The ARTS at Marks Garage over the years. I look forward to the time when we can all gather together again in Chinatown and celebrate!
Mahalo Nui,
Matthew Kelty, Executive Director, The ARTS at Marks Garage

See Our Current Show Online: "Quarantine Queens & Corona Goddesses" Featuring the collage work of Jeff Gere
Our September 2020 gallery/online exhibition is a showcase of rarely-seen handcrafted collage works by renowned Hawaiʻi master storyteller and performer Jeff Gere.
Known locally, nationally and internationally as a storyteller, Jeff Gere is also a master of the visual arts. His evocative collages are created from printed images gathered from magazines, travel guides, calendars, art books and more, which he meticulously pastes together (no Photoshop is used for his works), coloring the edges of all pieces for a seamless illusion. This exhibit shares the results of his work with the themes of “Goddesses, Queens and Moons” during the Covid-19 months.
