"New Normal: Contemporary Photography from a Pandemic in the Pacific" is a curated photo exhibition, opening Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at The ARTS at Marks Garage in Honolulu, Hawaii, and showing until Wednesday, December 30.
When the world as we know it changed due to Covid-19 earlier this year, Hawaiʻi changed drastically as well. In a place where the economy relies on tourism and a steady influx of visitors, we got to find out for the first time in many of our lifetimes what an empty Waikīkī Beach looks like. We celebrated holidays at home, and did a lot of things solo. Masks and empty streets became a part of our lives. Yet we still managed to connect with each other, despite social distancing and safety precautions. We expressed messages of hope and solidarity, some written on the sides of buildings several stories tall, some written on cardboard signs carried in street marches.
The ARTS at Marks Garage and the show’s curators, Tracy Chan and James Charisma, are honored to share the perspectives of 54 amateur and professional photographers from across the Hawaiian Islands with you. In their images, they capture the essence of this crazy year and a strange new normal that looks both familiar and otherworldly.
At the end of the show, each of the 5 judges will select their favorite images to receive a "Judge's Pick" prize. These prizes may range from gift certificates to local camera stores on Oahu to camera equipment. Winners will be notified by email by the show closing date.
