Shared pathway improvement project beginning near Honolulu Zoo

Current asphalt pathway along Paki Avenue to be replaced with wider, concrete sidewalk

O‘AHU -- A Capital Improvement Project to reconstruct the shared-use pathway along the mauka side of the Honolulu Zoo is scheduled to begin next week.

The pathway, which stretches approximately 1,500 feet (roughly a quarter mile) along Paki Avenue from Kapahulu to Monsaratt avenues, is currently deteriorating and experiencing damage from adjacent trees and heavy pedestrian use.

This project will remove the existing asphalt pathway and replace it with a wider, concrete sidewalk, while addressing some of the tree roots and branches that are impacting the pathway. These upgrades are intended to improve the pedestrian circulation along this popular pathway, while meeting ADA compliance. No tree removals are anticipated, and all tree work will be conducted under the supervision of a certified arborist.

The pathway is expected to be closed for the entirety of the project. Additional vehicular lane closures may be necessary near the work site, which are intermittently scheduled on weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Motorists are advised to avoid the area during that time.

The project is scheduled to be finished before winter 2021.

The over $440,000 construction contract for this project was awarded to Kaikor Construction Company, Inc.

A separate project to address the half-mile stretch of this pathway from Monsaratt Avenue to Poni Moi Road is currently being pursued and is expected to begin within a year.
