Hawaiʻi FEAST is excited to partner with the Trust for Public Land (TPL) Parks for People Program and Better Block Hawai‘i to offer an opportunity for artists to submit ideas for street art near ‘A‘ala Park in Honolulu. The selected artist will be provided a stipend to design and construct their proposed street art in November, 2021. Details about the project and submitting proposals are provided below.

TPL is currently launching their “Parks for People Program” at ‘A‘ala Park. The Parks for People Program is employing a community-based design process to create a shared vision for the future of ʻAʻala Park. 

To help catalyze this project, TPL is working with Better Block Hawai‘i to activate the park through public art. The project will include installing a mural on the triangle island, utility box, and nearby sidewalks at the King & Beretania Street intersection. The project goals are to increase pedestrian safety, beautify the intersection, and promote the park's history and cultural significance. 

An artist, or group of artists, will be selected to support the following activities:
•August 2021: Develop a draft street art design and provide art samples for outreach materials. 
•September 2021: Participate in (2-3) outreach meetings to help TPL and Better Block Hawai‘i gather input on the proposed street art design. 
•October 2021: Update and finalize the street art design and acquire needed materials and supplies. 
•November 2021: Install proposed street art in partnership with community.

Are you interested in participating in this project and working with the community to create street art near ʻAʻala Park? The selected artist, or group of artists, will receive $2,000 to compensate for their time, and an additional $2,000 to cover material costs. Proposals should be submitted by email to hawaiifeasting@gmail.com by 4pm on Friday, August 13th, and should include the following:
•Introduction and Experience: Include name, contact information, why you’re interested in this project, what area of the islands you live and work, your connection to ʻAʻala Park, Kapālama/Kou Ahupuaʻa, and/or the Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Micronesian, or other underrepresented communities, and a summary of relevant experience and/or education (max 1 page - scoring weight 40%). 
•Approach: Describe how the project will be completed, providing further detail to the tasks listed above. The project approach should reflect an understanding of public art projects and community engagement (max 2 pages - scoring weight 30%).
•Artwork Samples: Include samples of your artwork or links to articles or websites (2 to 4 pages - scoring weight 30%).
Artists will be informed by Friday, August 18th, if their proposal has been selected. Proposals will be selected by TPL, and will be judged on their quality, creativity, and potential for positive community impact. Note, preference will be given to artists with connections to ʻAʻala Park, Kapālama/Kou Ahupuaʻa, and/or the Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Micronesian community or other underrepresented communities. 

Hawai‘i FEAST (Funding Emerging Artists through Sustainable Tactics) builds community through artwork, storytelling, and food. Local artists produce ideas for public artwork and creative advocacy, and community members take part in the decision making process of selecting projects and financing them.
