Driver's license and state ID expirations moved to October
HONOLULU -- Oâahu residents with driver's licenses, state identification cards and instruction permits that have originally expired since March 2020 now have an additional two months to renew.
The validity of Hawaiâi driver's licenses, state identification cards and instruction permits has been extended to Oct. 4, 2021, giving an estimated 128,000 Oâahu residents extra time to renew.
Governor David Ige's latest emergency proclamation made it possible for the extension on the expiration dates of these credentials.
Since March 2020, more than 97,000 driver's licenses, learner's permits, and state identification cards have expired and have not been renewed, and an estimated 31,000 others will expire by Oct 4.
"We encourage residents who need to update their driver's licenses, state IDs or instruction permits to take advantage of our appointment system, extended hours and walk-in service," said Nola Miyasaki, director of the city's Department of Customer Services. "Another extension is not guaranteed."
Since July 1, the KapÄlama, Kapolei, Koâolau and Waiâanae driver licensing centers have been operating from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to meet demand for driver's licenses, state IDs and instruction permits.
The Windward City, Hawaiâi Kai and Downtown satellite city halls have also been opening an hour early at 7 a.m. on weekdays, and operating from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, specifically for customers who need to renew driver's licenses, state IDs and instruction permits. The Pearlridge Satellite City Hall is also now open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the same reason.
Appointments are recommended on the city's AlohaQ reservation system. Stand-by service is available to fill appointment slots that become available from cancellations or no-shows; however, same-day service is not guaranteed.
