Self-Service Vehicle Registration Kiosks Get An Upgrade
- Tweet
HONOLULU – The self-service kiosks for renewing a motor vehicle registration on O‘ahu are sporting a new look.
The redesigned kiosks, which operate much like ATMs, have been upgraded to more efficiently renew and print registration cards and emblems on demand.
New features of these bright yellow touch-screen terminals include five language options: English, Hawaiian, Korean, Chinese and Japanese. They also have extra capacity to handle the high volume use of these new-look kiosks across O‘ahu.
Known as Hawai‘i DMV Now self-service kiosks, these free-standing terminals have processed and printed 104,665 registration renewals so far this year on O‘ahu, representing a 38 percent increase over the first nine months of last year.
“The redesign fits into our broader ambition to provide a better customer experience on O‘ahu, where the growing use of these free-standing terminals have been a welcome side effect of the ongoing pandemic,” said Nola Miyasaki, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services.
The kiosks, which are deployed at select Safeway and Foodland supermarkets, allow motorists to remotely renew registrations outside of satellite city halls, while avoiding lines, maintaining social distancing and eliminating wait time required for registrations by mail and online.
The kiosks also accept registration renewals up to 10 months past the expiration date. Late registrations are assessed a standard $16 fee.
The vendor’s $3 convenience fee is assessed to transactions at the kiosks, which are open late, if not 24/7. The convenience fee is added to the 2.5 percent fee on credit and debit cards assessed by financial institutions when used at any of the kiosks.
