$2 Fee To Obtain New Holo Cards Starting March 1st

HOLO Card
HONOLULU – The Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) will begin charging $2 for new HOLO cards starting March 1, 2022. The HOLO card made its service debut December 2018, transition from paper bus passes last year in July 2021, and has been free of charge since 2018.
“We have distributed more than 225,000 HOLO over the past few years and about 70,000 people use the cards each month” says DTS Director Roger Morton. “HOLO cards have electronic chips and are designed to last at least 5 years. The new charge is intended to discourage single use of the cards”
The HOLO card functions as the main fare payment for TheBus and will be the primary payment method for rail. The card can be registered under the owner’s name, and loaded with funds to pay for rides. A simple “tap” with the card on the card reader lets the driver and rider know that they have paid and allowed to board TheBus. The convenience of a registered HOLO card allows for balance protection against lost or stolen cards, reduces the need to keep track of paper passes, and can be setup to automatically re-loaded when the card runs low of funds. Registered cards contain automatic transfers and both daily and monthly fare caps. TheBus riders will still be able to pay a one-way fare with cash.
On March 1st, the Adult, Youth, and Medicare HOLO cards will cost $2.00 for new card holders and for replacements. New Disability, Senior, and Low-Income HOLO card users will be able to obtain their first cards for free. Replacements after will cost $2.00. TheHandi-Van HOLO cards will not be affected by the card fee. Current HOLO card holders will not be affected, unless a replacement is needed.
New riders looking to obtain a HOLO card are encouraged to get one before the March 1st date, and familiarize themselves with the process. HOLO card locations can be found at www.holocard.net or call 808-768-4656 for more information. New Senior, Disability, and Youth reduced fare applications can go to www.thebus.org or call Customer Service at 808-848-5555 select 3, for more information.
