City stands ready to assist in permanent closure of Red Hill fuel tank facility
HONOLULU -- Mayor Rick Blangiardi announces that he received a personal phone call this morning from Admiral John C. Aquilino, Commander, United States Indo-Pacific Command, from Washington, D.C., indicating Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, made a decision Monday morning to close the U.S. Navy's Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility to protect the population, O‘ahu's clean water source and the environment. Admiral Aquilino assured Mayor Blangiardi that he will work closely with the City and County of Honolulu and the State Department of Health to effectuate Secretary Austin's decision and he looks forward to working with Mayor Blangiardi on productive communications and a strengthened relationship between the U.S. Navy and the community.
Mayor Blangiardi informed Admiral Aquilino that he welcomed the Secretary's decision and he assured the Admiral the City and County of Honolulu will assist and do everything within its power to implement this decision as quickly as possible.
