Fee for a personalized Hawai‘i license plate will increase to $60

HONOLULU – The fee for a personalized Hawai‘i license plate is going up to fulfill a state mandate imposed on the city’s Motor Vehicle Registration Branch.

The statewide fee increase, which takes effect July 1 and affects at least 17,000 motorists on O‘ahu, would bring the cost of a personalized Hawai‘i license plate to $60, up $35.

“While we are obligated under state law to put the increase in place this year, we wanted to at least let the public know well in advance,” said Kim Hashiro, director designate of the city’s Department of Customer Services.

The increase is set to take effect at a time when O‘ahu has seen a 22 percent increase in applications for personalized license plates.

The increase also coincides with nagging concerns about applications that get rejected for not meeting statewide rules of decency. The Motor Vehicle Registration Branch can reject or recall personalized Hawai‘i license plates that are obvious violations of state law.

As for the fee increase on these vanity license plates, the Hawai‘i Legislature passed
SB772 in 2021, which amended HRS Section 249-9.1 to bump the fee for personalized license plates to $60 from $25.

To avoid the increased fee for personalized license plates, motorists can go to a satellite city hall and request to switch to a standard license plate for $5. For more information on ordering a personalized Hawai‘i license place, or transferring to a regular Hawai‘i license plate, visit
