HONOLULU -- Last week the NOAA Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) announced there is a 60% chance of a below normal hurricane season with 2-4 Tropical Cyclones forming or moving into the Central Pacific and Hawaiian coastal waters. Tropical cyclones include tropical depressions, named storms and hurricanes.

"While the 2022 forecast appears to be in our favor, we simply cannot allow ourselves to become complacent. All it takes is one storm, and we should all proactively prepare in whatever ways we can," said Hiro Toiya, director for the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management. "We are heavily dependent on items brought in by air or ocean to meet our day to day needs. Heavy winds and coastal inundation from hurricane storm surge could damage our supply chain infrastructure and cause disruptions for weeks. We all have to plan and prepare for this possibility."

The City's 2021 Multi-Hazard Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan risk assessment noted that Honolulu Harbor and Honolulu International Airport were both highly vulnerable from the effects of hurricane winds and storm surge. In the aftermath of a destructive hurricane, it could take up to 19-days or longer to open our harbors and as long as two-weeks before normal air operations could resume. The impacts to these critical facilities will highly affect our community and our states' ability to recover.
