Public survey launched for Park Ranger Assessment Program

Survey open now until

Tuesday, March 28

at 4:30 p.m.

O‘AHU -- As part of the goal to determine future efforts for compliance and enforcement of City park rules, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is looking for your input regarding a Park Ranger Assessment Project primarily focused on addressing unauthorized commercial activity in your City parks.

To assist with this effort, a public survey is now open to gather your input regarding park usage, unauthorized commercial activity in City parks, and what type of enforcement powers you are comfortable providing to Park Rangers.

The survey is accessible online by visiting bit.ly/ParkRangerSurvey

Physical copies of the surveys are also available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at two locations for those without computer and/or internet access:

Kapolei Hale

1000 Ulu‘ōhi‘a Street

Suite 309

Kapolei, Hawai‘i 96707

Frank F. Fasi Municipal Building

DPR Permits Office, 1st Floor

650 South King Street

Honolulu, HI 96813

The survey will be open until 4:30 p.m. (HST) on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

You must be a least 18-years-old to participate in the survey, which is voluntary and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. All responses will remain anonymous.

Utilizing nearly $822,000 in Federal American Rescue Plan Act State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, with the assistance from the Honolulu City Council, DPR launched the Park Ranger Assessment Project in late 2022 to assess the possibility of: Park Rangers in your City parks, what type of enforcement is necessary, and what would be needed to support such efforts. Given the vast number of designated park sites under DPR's jurisdiction (402), limited project staff, and the desire to assist the Honolulu Police Department with enforcement of park rules, it's important to hear from the public to gain a better understanding of what is actively occurring in your parks.

In addition to this public survey, additional ranger staff will be hired to further assess existing conditions, collaborate with other enforcement agencies, and help DPR and the City determine the best course of action for future efforts to encourage compliance with park rules and enforcement should it be necessary.

Mahalo in advance to members of the public for completing this survey. We appreciate your time and mana‘o regarding the Park Ranger Assessment Project.
