O‘AHU – Waimānalo residents and the general public are invited to a meeting to discuss the City’s proposal to rebuild the pavilion at Waimānalo Beach Park. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 8, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at the Waimānalo District Park Gymnasium.
The Honolulu Department of Design and Construction, Department of Parks and Recreation, and consultant Planning Solutions, Inc. will be present to engage residents in a dialogue about the proposed beach park pavilion project, gather feedback, and answer questions. Attendees will have an opportunity to provide input on the design and share their concerns or suggestions. This is a valuable opportunity for residents to learn more about the project and have their voices heard.
Public Meeting
Date: Thursday, June 8, 2023
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Location: Waimānalo District Park Gymnasium, 41-415 Hīhīmanu Street, Waimānalo, HI 96795
This facility is intended to replace the park’s former pavilion, restoring it to its original form, as we understand the importance the pavilion held for the community and with treasured events such as the Gabby Pahinui Waimānalo Kanikapila and the Waimānalo Summer Fun Program. The original pavilion was built in 1959 and removed due to structural safety issues in Fall 2019.
The City also intends to improve the structures adjacent to the pavilion, including the arson-damaged recreation building and comfort station. The pavilion project includes an Environmental Assessment for the current conditions of the recreation building and comfort station, so the permitting for all three projects can be done at one time. Because of their proximity to the shoreline, these projects are within the Special Management Area (SMA) and therefore require additional permitting and consideration. The City will plan the improvements for all three structures, but begin the actual construction for the pavilion first. Additional public meetings will be held regarding the recreation building and comfort station projects. We greatly appreciate the patience of the community as the City works to restore these community resources with this measured approach.
