Exhibition Walkthrough

Date: September 15, 2024, Sunday 2:00–4:00 pm
Please join us for a discussion of Satoru Abe’s artwork and the impact that he has had on generations of Hawai‘i-based artists. Featuring Kahi Ching, Kaili Chun, Solomon Enos, John Koga, Roland Longstreet, Jerry Vasconcellos, and Debbie Young. Facilitated by Interim Director of the Galleries and Museum, Debra Drexler, in the presence of Satoru Abe.

Satoru Abe: 100 New Paintings I wanted to paint something that I had never painted before. With no preconceived concepts, sketches or notions in mind, I started my first blank canvas with just a palette of oil paints.
– Satoru Abe, May, 2024

Satoru Abe (b. 1926) is one of the most significant artists in the history of Hawai‘i. In his 90s, he has been remarkably prolific and exploratory, producing 318 paintings since 2019. Satoru Abe: 100 New Paintings features 100 of these dynamic new works. The paintings demonstrate Abe’s on-going commitment to abstraction, and the unique sense of form that can be seen in his sculpture. Lyric colors and poetic forms are inspired by the natural world. He combines gestural abstraction with hard-edged boundaries, creating dynamic surface tension and depth. While his language of abstract themes creates a formal continuity, each piece is original and unique.

The work of Satoru Abe has always had a powerful impact on my sense of design as a native artist. It is as if the islands below and the heavens above had found, through Mr. Abe, a new voice with which to communicate to our contemporary world. His forms are visually delicious, and just enough to leave one’s soul full and content.
– Solomon Enos

Satoru Abe’s generous mentorship has impacted generations of some of the most significant artists in Hawai‘i. Exhibition includes Kahi Ching, Kaili Chun, Solomon Enos, John Koga, Roland Longstreet, Mary Mitsuda, Kamran Samimi, Lawrence Seward, Juvana Soliven, Jerry Vasconcellos, and Debbie Young.

When I met John in 1971, I was not meeting someone locked into a vision of complacency, but rather an individual who was continually seeking the uncertainties and newness of the moment.

– Nathan Oliveira

John Young: A Retrospective (Honolulu Academy of Art, 1996)

On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the John Young Museum of Art,
John Young, His Life and Work celebrates the joie de vivre, complexity and power of Young’s work. John Young produced a range of art pieces that deftly demonstrates both experimentation and engagement with critical art movements of his time. John Young was constantly curious and evolving as an artist, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in paint.
