City’s DMV makes alternative license plates temporarily available

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Customer Services announced today that it is temporarily offering alternative license plates to continue meeting demand for this visible aspect of motor vehicles across O‘ahu.

The alternative license plates are available to help ensure that motor vehicles are street legal.

They are also intended to offset production delays in making available the updated standard issue number license plate that correctly spells the word Hawaiʻi with a Hawaiian diacritical
ʻ
okina mark.

Among the immediately available alternatives are any of about 15 organization special number license plates that assist qualified nonprofits with causes such as education, public safety and efforts to reduce aggressive driving behavior.

Included among the alternatives is the America United organization special number license plate, which will be available free of charge. Also available are specialty license plates that provide monetary support to the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Haleakala National Park, and Volcanoes National Park.

“We are disappointed by the unforeseen delay in the delivery of the new license plates,” said Kim Hashiro, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services, which administers DMV services in the City and County of Honolulu. “However, we are working closely with our vendor and doing everything possible to continue meeting customer needs, and look forward to announcing the arrival of the updated license plates as soon as they are available.”
