ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ART GALLERY
(updated 07/09)
The University of Hawaii Art Gallery presents a varied exhibition program that plays a significant role in providing information about the visual arts in both an historical and contemporary context. One of the finest temporary exhibition facilities in the nation, the gallery consists of approximately 4200 square feet of versatile space with an installation system of modular and movable walls that allows the utmost in flexibility of presentation. The installation design is completely changed for each major exhibition to enhance the specific theme. Approximately 50,000 visitors annually view five exhibitions in the UH Art Gallery and weekly exhibitions in the smaller Commons Gallery that serves an important role as a showcase for thesis exhibitions, the work of visiting artists, and on-going class work. Admission to both galleries is free.
Public programs of lectures, symposia, films, and docent tours have increased the community outreach of the exhibitions. Organized tours for students from public and private schools constitute another aspect of the gallery's programming.
Since its inception in 1976 the University of Hawaii Art Gallery has developed a national and international reputation for the quality of its exhibitions and publications both in content and design. Five exhibitions received the distinguished Print Casebooks Best in Exhibition Design Awards. Many of the gallery's publications, which have increasingly emphasized the educational component of an exhibition, have been recognized by the annual Pele competition of the American Advertising Federation, Hawaii District and by the American Association of Museums, the national organization that develops standards and best practices for the entire museum community. In 2008, the gallery's first educational website received a bronze Media and Technology MUSE Award in the category of teaching and outreach from nearly 180 entries from a variety of museums in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
The University of Hawaii Art Gallery has initiated and organized 19 traveling exhibitions that have been presented at over 100 museums in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, and Guam. The 10th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition is currently traveling to 10 venues throughout the United States and Korea.
